Kitchen Cutting Boards
A cutting board is an effective, durable board used for laying out material for cutting. The most common kitchen cutting boards are made of plastic or wood and come in different sizes and widths. Popular brands include; Lamson, Purdy cutters, Blunt, and DeWalt. These brands are available at most home improvement stores. Some specialty stores carry specialized brands that may be more appropriate for particular types of jobs.

Lamson and Purdy cutting boards are laminated wooden boards used for kitchen use. They are available in a wide variety of colors, finishes, and styles. Lamson makes three different boards, each with a different style. All three are excellent for kitchen use, but the Lamson has a laminate finish that may be easier to clean than some of the other styles of plastic or wood boards.
Blunt kitchen cutting boards have a plastic surface and are made from two pieces of wood bonded together. They are typically less expensive than plastic or wood boards, although they are not as sturdy as the Lamson. Many people choose to use blunt board in their kitchens because of the durability and ease of cleaning. A smooth plastic surface makes it easier to clean between uses. They are usually only available in a couple of colors.
Wood cutting boards can also be used for cutting and should be regularly cleaned with disinfectant or anti-bacterial fluids. They should be wiped down after each use and are best washed by hand. Dirt or bacteria on the cutting surface can cause food to stick and discolor your food. Many bacteria cause food poisoning and those who enjoy cooking know the damage knives can do.
High-end kitchen cutting boards will have a full core, which is a thicker and more durable version of the plastic core. The full core has the durability of both the plastic and the wood. It also will not change color with usage like the two types of cutting boards. The high-end boards are usually sold in bulk to companies who use them for catering. The fibers within the core are much finer than the fibers in the other cutting surfaces and this gives them a more refined look and allows the knife to slide along the core fibers.
Some plastic cutting boards contain a synthetic core, which can help cut down on bacteria growth between uses. Because bacteria grow better in a warm place, the synthetic core plastic promotes better sanitary conditions for food preparation. Some plastic cutting boards contain silicone, which is similar to the skin of a bee and allows the knife to glide more easily across the board. Silicone is non-porous, so it does not change with use unlike wood and plastic surfaces.
You will notice that different brand name cutting boards have different surface textures to them. Some have grooves while others have sawdust like cuts. This is due to the way they were manufactured. Many of the more expensive brands of cutting boards were handmade in the kitchen and only available in certain kitchen supply stores. Grooves in the surface of the board to allow different types of knives to slip between the board and help to avoid cuts.
Wood cutting boards come in different natural colors. They are commonly made from maple, ash, birch or spruce. These types of woods are perfect for people who do not want their counter tops covered with knife marks. There is no stain and they help reduce bacteria growth because the surfaces are naturally antibacterial. You can purchase these in large quantities at home improvement stores. For individuals who do not like to keep their countertops or tables covered, this is an option they may want to look into.
