Mattress Protectors - Why Buy One?
A mattress protector is typically an item of lightweight bedding that envelops or sits on top of, a mattress to prevent it from being scratched, dented, or damaged by furniture, luggage, children, and other household items. Some mattress protectors even provide added protection for the individual sleeping on the mattress as well from allergens, irritants, and even mold and bed bugs. Bed liners, which often consist of a thin plastic layer over the mattress and other padding, can also be used as a protective covering for the mattress as well. Liners are available in a variety of thicknesses to cover the entire mattress and offer additional comfort and protection. It is important to remember, however, that if the liner itself becomes damaged, it could leave holes or punctures in the mattress and result in more discomfort and damage than if the protector had been in place before the bedding.

Many people opt to use mattress protectors that are made with all-natural cotton blend instead of something synthetic and more synthetic. Breathable fabrics are beneficial for several reasons. They allow air to flow through them, keeping the room cool in warm temperatures, and allowing perspiration to evaporate quickly so the individual doesn't get too hot. In addition, the breathable nature of the fabric allows the fabric to shed as much as two to four inches of moisture each day. This allows the mattress to remain dryer and allow for more rapid evaporation of harmful bacteria and mold. Breathable fabrics are often recommended for use in bedrooms because they often feel cooler and more comfortable there.
When a person is shopping for mattress protectors, he or she may be interested in purchasing some that double as a bed sheet. A bed sheet protector can function as a blanket on which to lay down and protect the mattress itself from hard surfaces. Some bed sheets also double as mattress pads which are useful when the sheets have gotten too wet and need a couple of days to dry.
Many mattress protectors include a special anti-vibration pad included in the package. These pads help eliminate the noise that some people end up making when their beds are soiled by liquids and other forms of dirt and stains. This is important, especially if you have a baby or young children sleeping in your home.
A major benefit of mattress protectors is that they help reduce the amount of dust and dirt that ends up on the actual bed. This is because they help collect any liquid spills that occur on the mattress. However, they are not totally foolproof. If one accidentally spills a glass of water on the cover, for example, it will still allow dust and dirt to seep into the actual bed and onto the sheets that may still be laid upon it.
Mattress protectors also work to keep spills from occurring in the first place. Since they are not entirely waterproof, some can leak. Still, some are made with added protection from chemicals such as bleach, which can be harmful to new mattresses. Chemical spills can occur if a protective pad is damp enough to allow the chemicals to enter and create a stain.
Mattress protectors come in many different sizes. Small, medium, large, and extra large sizes are available, so there is definitely a size that will fit both your budget and your needs. Most new mattress protectors are in standard twin size fits most standard bed frames. Some larger models are available in king, queen, and California king sizes.
Many people mistakenly believe that the purpose of a mattress protector is purely as a preventative measure. While the protection can certainly help you keep your bed clean and free of stains and soils, it is important to realize that it is a very inexpensive way to extend the life of your mattress. A good quality mattress protector can be found for less than ten dollars, with many retailers taking the cost of shipping into account. As an added benefit, since the mattress stays protected, you will not need to purchase a new mattress to accommodate a spilled pad. If you already have a pad and are in need of a new one, simply remove it and purchase a new mattress protector.
